Ensuring a Secure Water Future

More than 100 years of visionary planning and significant investments in the water supply system have helped Greater Phoenix successfully prepare for growth.

The Arizona Department of Water Resources works to secure long-term water supplies for Arizona's communities, making Greater Phoenix a sustainable living environment.

Sources of Water

Our region benefits from four major water sources:

  • Colorado River water delivered by the Central Arizona Project.
  • Salt River and Verde River water delivered by SRP.
  • Groundwater supplies that are replenished through recharge projects.
  • Stored water underground that can supplement surface water when low run-off occurs.

The watersheds that serve Greater Phoenix benefit from two different weather patterns. As a result, at least one of the watersheds typically receives average or above-average precipitation each year.
